Matt – our Head of Genetics and Cultivation – has lived off-the-grid in Downeast Maine for the last 7 years, surfing the Bold Coast and employing his own “WILD” breeding methods to produce strains that not only survive, but thrive in the region’s harsh conditions. Each of our strains is derived from a unique roster of native “landraces” or “volunteers,” which have been bred against phenotypes with different cannabinoid and terpene profiles, resulting in a diverse set of regionally-acclimated genetics that yield clean, high-quality cannabis. This breeding process is the cornerstone for all that we do and enables a cultivation philosophy focused on both harnessing and protecting our natural resources.
Instead of relying on artificial additives, our strains are bred to succeed using only organic nutrients, including locally-sourced lobster, crab, and oyster shells, seaweed, kelp, and peat. These recycled components help to create a “living soil” conducive to healthy plant growth when paired with just water and sunlight. Raised in this natural environment and within the region’s famous wild blueberry barrens, Northern Sol cannabis offers the ultimate reflection of our local ecosystem, or “terroir.”
In order to thrive in Northeastern Maine’s notoriously short and unforgiving grow season – bookended by regular frosts in the early summer and fall – Northern Sol strains are bred to be planted late and harvested early, ensuring the quality of our products. Acclimated to the local light cycle, our plants love the long summer days and are able to complete their life cycle between the colder periods when plants tend to be most vulnerable.
The environment is good (kind?) to our plants, our plants are good (kind?) to the environment: a virtuous cycle that our future depends on. By growing in a true outdoor setting, utilizing the area’s renewable resources, and harnessing the power of the sun, Northern Sol cannabis is cultivated with minimal carbon output. [Maybe add something about solar and sustainable packaging].
Met on the first day of college, moved back in together at 30, and while they rarely compliment each other, they complement each other quite well…
Matt breeds the strains and oversees the farm, Zack contributes manual labor and the occasional good idea; Zack’s serviceable at what Matt calls “computer work,” Matt only recently transitioned from a flip phone.
Prolific artist and molder of young minds. The Northern Sōl family is incredibly lucky to have her as a creative partner and friend.
Recently promoted to Head of Security on account of being a very good boy.
